International Forum On
Calypso, Calypsonian, Anansi
And Other Griots

In the context of the V International Calypso Festival, the University of Costa Rica has sent out a call for papers for the International Forum: Calypso, Calypsonian, Anansi and other Griots. The forum will be held in Cahuita, Costa Rica, July 10-12, 2017. The Calypso Festival takes place July 13-16. The deadline for submission of abstracts is May 30, 2017.

Call for Papers: In the context of the V International Calypso Festival, the Academic Forum on Calypso, Calypsonians, Anansi and other Griots will be held to inform and nurture the history, language, culture and identity of Afro-Caribbeans.

With strong ties to Africa but also with their recreation unique to the Caribbean, the griots, whether as a calypsonians or as a tellers of anansi stories are the living example of community network of knowledge, solidarity, culture and empowerment.

The study of their social role, lyrics, narratives, forms and functions, similarities and differences, is the objective of this three-day forum (10-12 July) which will precede the Calypso Festival (13-16 July) in the town of Cahuita, on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica.

Those interested in presenting papers on the topics of this Symposium are invited to send a summary (five lines) of their proposal with a brief reference of the sources used in their research and a short CV to the following e-mail address: catedraafricacaribe.vd@ucr.ac.cr
