Documentary
on Nollywood
The ultra-prolific Nigerian film industry, known as Nollywood, has been the subject of much discussion here on this blog, but it’s been some time since a fresh set of eyes examined the booming sector, which is famously second only to India’s Bollywood film factory in terms of the sheer number of films produced (as many as 50 per week).
Al Jazeera English just produced a new hour-long documentary on Nollywood, simply titled Nollywood, and they’ve released free online for all to enjoy. The film examines Nigeria’s movie business from its humble beginnings many decades ago through the present. Featured in Nollywood are popular Nigerian filmmakers like Kunle Afolayan, James Omokwe, Mildred Okwo, Obi Emelonye, Tunde Kelani, Stanlee Ohikhuare and Udoka Oyeka, as well as Nollywood actors such as Genevieve Nnaji, Mercy Johnson, Ramsey Nouah, Bimbo Manuel, Joke Silva, Kiki Omeili and Olu Jacobs.
