STORIES THAT NEED

TO BE TOLD:

THE CONTEST

Deadline: August 29, 2015

Tell us a story.

TulipTree is just a little sprout in terms of how long it’s been in the world, but already its branches are finding their own way toward the sun, and the organization is becoming what it needs to be. In that spirit, I am reworking the contests. As I struggled with how to proceed, how many contests and which ones to hold, it dawned on me that the contest had already named itself: Stories That Need To Be Told. So, instead of quarterly contests for each journal issue, there will be one contest per year.

Category

There is only one category: the Story

There is an adage that I love that says if you write “fiction” everyone assumes it’s true; if you write “nonfiction” everyone assumes you’re making stuff up. I think there is truth in any story, and in fact the very story you choose to tell is a story, and that may be the most important one of all. But, before I get too philosophical, here’s the point: submissions should tell a story. I don’t care if you consider it fiction or nonfiction. I’m even open to poems, if they tell a story.
