The communityJOINS together today in Union Square, NYC for a vigil remembering women victims of police brutality

Today, the family members of women that have lost their lives due to police brutality held a vigil in remembrance of victims Alberta Spruil, Rekia Boyd, Shantel Davis, Shelly Frey, Kayla Moore, Kyam Livingston, Miriam Carey, Michelle Cusseax and Tanisha Anderson. The news headlines have been flooded with the deaths of Black men who have lost their lives to the hands of law enforcement officials, but few have protested or rallied for the women whose lives have been lost.

Far less attention has been paid to the women who have been killed by police, so today a vigil under the banner of #SayHerName is being organized in New York to remember them. Kimberlé Crenshaw, professor of law at UCLA, ColumbiaUNIVERSITY, founder of the African American Policy Forum and co-author of the newly releasedREPORT, “Police Brutality Against Black Women”, was interviewed on Democracy Now this morning. So, the report was basically an effort to literally lift up the names of people like Michelle Cusseaux or Rekia Boyd, to recognize that black women experience police brutality in many of the same ways that black men do and also in some ways that are different. Many of the cases that we talk about in the report involve police literally coming into people’s homes, into their bedrooms, and actually killing them.”
