THE ODDS
Sequoia Canada learned early not to trust her parents. She remembers her mother making an offer to exchange her for drugs. Sequoia listened to her instincts and ran. She ended up in foster care.
After six years in the system, she moved in with her grandmother, where she now lives with her two younger sisters. Sequoia strives to set a good example for her siblings and will be the first person in her family to attend college. Sequoia wants to become a psychologist and looks forward to one day being able to adopt her siblings and take proper care of her grandmother.
Sequoia Canada was honored at the 24th Annual CDF-CA Beat the Odds Awards ceremony on December 4, 2014 hosted by the Children’s Defense Fund.
