On February 2nd, 2014, iconic and world renowned Nigerian photographer Johnson Donatus Aihumekeokhai Ojeikere, more commonly known as J.D. Okhai Ojeikere passed away at the age of the 83. Ojeikere left behind a legacy as possibly the only photographer to preserve the history and stories behind traditional Nigerian hairstyles as they began emerging in the 1960s, following the country’s independence.

Here, curator Bisi Silva of the Centre for Contemporary Art in Lagos speaks to the BBC about one of those particular hairstyles, the “Onile Gogoro”, and the meaning behind it.

More on hair.
