Special Issue Call for Papers

“Intersections of race, gender, and class in the wake of a crisis: The state of boys and men of color post-Ferguson”

The events that occurred in Ferguson, Missouri during the summer of 2014 affected communities across the United States and around the world. To underscore the aftermath of these events on individuals and communities — attending specifically to how they have impacted the lives of men of color — the Journal of Men’s Studies (SAGE Publications) will be publishing a special issue on the intersections of race, gender, and class in the wake of a national crisis. Research on boys and men of color considers how their living and working conditions are determined by cultural, environmental, institutional, and economic factors associated with race, ethnicity and other socially defined identities and group memberships. We seek to publish manuscripts on the state of boys and men of color in the aftermath of the events in Ferguson, Missouri to mark the one-year anniversary of activism in Ferguson. It is anticipated that this special issue will be published during late 2015/early 2016.

Dr. Daphne C. Watkins, Dr. Desmond Patton, and Dr. Reuben Miller from the University of Michigan School of Social Work are guest editors for this special issue. They welcome a range of papers that demonstrate how race, gender, class, and other salient classifications influence how various levels of society interact with boys and men of color. Papers that include qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods are welcomed, as are those that discuss the design, implementation, and evaluation of interventions for boys and men of color. Commentaries and literature reviews will also be considered. Topics may include (but are not limited to):

• Health disparities demonstrated through race, ethnicity, class, and/or gender 
• The criminal justice system’s influence on masculinity and the trajectory of boys and men 
• The influence of education on the wellbeing of boys and men of color 
• Health and human services professionals who work with boys and men 
• Individuals and communities impacted by the presence (or lack) of boys and men of color 
• Masculinity and the politics of death 
• Social movement activism and the male body 
• Public life in the wake of police brutality 
• Strategies used by men and boys to navigate community violence 
• The role of social media in communicating about and understanding race, class, and gender
  If you are interested in submitting a paper for this JMS special issue, please submit an abstract for your proposed paper no later than December 30, 2014 to “JMS-special-issue@umich.edu” with “Abstract for JMS Special Issue” in the subject line of your email. The abstract should be no more than 250 words and a title page (that includes the title of the paper and each author’s name, institutional affiliation, and complete contact information) should precede it. Invitations for full-article submissions will be sent no later than January 30, 2015 with full manuscripts due no later than April 1, 2015.
