THE JANE LUMLEY PRIZE
The first annual Jane Lumley Prize For Emerging Writers is open for submissions till November 30th 2014!
The Jane Lumley Prize is awarded annually to a writer who has yet not published a full length book of poetry or prose. The prize alternates each year between prose and poetry, and the inaugural year will seek to recognize the brilliance of an exceptional piece of poetry.
The winner, selected by our editor, will receive a prize of $300 and will be featured in Issue 6, to be published in January 2015. Publication will also be awarded to the first two semi-finalists. In addition, all the entries will be considered for publication.
Hermeneutic Chaos will cease to accept submissions for The Jane Lumley Prize on the midnight of November 30, 2014. A response will be sent to all the entrants by December 3rd, 2014.
Kindly note that there is no entry fee for this contest.
ELIGIBILITY:
The Jane Lumley Prize will only be awarded to writers who have not published a full length book. However, they may have published a chapbook, and/or found a home for their works in other literary journals. We also invite unpublished writers to submit their poems for consideration.
If you know the editor and/or any staff member of Hermeneutic Chaos Literary Journal, you must not submit your work. If such a relationship is identified, your entry would be disqualified.
GUIDELINES :
In 2014, The Jane Lumley Prize will be awarded to an outstanding piece of poetry.
You may submit a maximum of six poems for consideration in a single word document. The poems must be original and previously unpublished. All the entries must be sent to us via our online submission form.
We welcome submissions of all forms of poetry, including prose poetry. Each poem should not exceed 2 pages.
Please remove all identifying information from the poems themselves, for all the entries will be read anonymously. However, you are required to enter all the necessary details in the online submission form.
We encourage simultaneous submissions, but we request you to withdraw your work in case it finds an acceptance elsewhere, by sending a mail to editor.hermeneuticchaos@gmail.com.
We do not accept multiple submissions. Please submit only once.
OUR POLICY:
The Jane Lumley Prize for Emerging Writers respects and upholds the code of ethics outlined by the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses, defined as such:
“CLMP’s community of independent literary publishers believe that ethical contests serve our shared goal: to connect writers and readers by publishing exceptional writing. We believe that intent to act ethically, clarity of guidelines, and transparency of process form the foundation of an ethical contest. To that end, we agree to 1) conduct our contests as ethically as possible and to address any unethical behavior on the part of our readers, judges, or editors; 2) to provide clear and specific contest guidelines—defining conflict of interest for all parties involved; and 3) to make the mechanics of our selection process available to the public. This Code recognizes that different contest models produce different results, but that each model can be run ethically. We have adopted this Code to reinforce our integrity and dedication as a publishing community and to ensure that our contests contribute to a vibrant literary heritage.”
