It’s once again time for The Cupboard’s *-Ever Contest. As always, one winning manuscript will be published as a volume of The Cupboard and its author will receive $500 and contributor’s copies. We’re incredibly excited to announce our judge this year: it’s Alissa Nutting!

Entry period is February 1 through March 30, 2014. Entry fee: $10. And since it was a popular option last year, we’re again offering a subscription discount with your contest submission. (Subscriptions will begin with the winning pamphlet.)

Please submit manuscripts between 4,000 and 10,000 words here. Submissions can comprise one piece or many. The entire manuscript should not have been published previously, but if individual pieces have appeared elsewhere, please include an acknowledgments page. We do not publish verse poetry. All submissions will be read blind so do not include your name or contact information anywhere on the manuscript, but do include this information in your cover letter. Simultaneous and multiple submissions are fine, though each submission will require the $10 fee. All submissions will be considered for general publication.

About Alissa Nutting

Alissa Nutting is the author of the novel Tampa, published last year by Ecco/HarperCollins and the short story collection Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls(Starcherone/Dzanc 2010), which won the Starcherone Prize for Innovative Fiction judged by Ben Marcus. Her fiction has appeared in The Norton Introduction to Literature, Tin House, Bomb, and Conduit, and her essays have appeared in Fence, the New York Times, O: The Oprah Magazine, and other venues. An assistant professor of creative writing and English literature at John Carroll University, she lives in Ohio with her husband, her daughter, and two spoiled tiny dogs.

General Submissions

Subscribers’ Submissions
All subscribers to The Cupboard are invited to submit work at any time. Guidelines are the same. Subscribers should submit prose work between 4,000 and 8,000 words. Submissions can be composed of one piece or multiple pieces. We do not publish verse poetry. Send manuscripts through Submittable. Please include a note by way of introduction.

Sideboards
Our Web-only Sideboards a kind of junior companion to the quarterly Cupboards you get in your mailbox. Sure, cupboards get more daily use, but it’s in the sideboard where we keep our fragiler pieces, the ones in that deco pattern they discontinued. Our Sideboards are short prose pieces with two rules. (1) They must have fewer than 500 words in them, and (2) at least two of those words must be cupboard and pamphlet. Given these minimal constraints, we’d love to see what you might come up with. Sideboards are accepted every day. Head over here to submit one. Sideboards are published periodically on our News page.
