AMIRI BARAKA

Promo video for a showing of Amiri Baraka’s ‘Wise Why’s Y’s’. ‘Wise Why’s Y’s’ is an epic journey through the history of Africans in America. Paying homage to Langston Hughes’ ‘Ask Your Mama’, William Carlos Williams’ ‘Patterson’, and Melvin B. Tolson’s ‘Liberia’ alike, it attempts to articulate the history of a people or a place. It questions and answers broad themes of history and cultural identity. Adapted to the stage by E.G. Bailey, in collaboration with Amiri Baraka and Aneka McMullen, this work continues to grow and evolve from page to stage incorporating spoken word, jazz, dance and visual art. For more information please contact egbcontact@gmail.com.

E.G. Bailey, in partnership with Aneka McMullen, is a fiscal year 2011 recipient of a Cultural Community Partnership grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
