Northwind 2013 Story Contest
The 2013 Story Contest is now open to all fiction and narrative non-fiction writers. Read our general submission guidelinesto get a sense of what we publish, or read the magazine itself. (It’s free.) Entries must be previously unpublished, either in print or online, between 1,500 and 8,000 words, and must not have been previously chosen as a winner or runner-up in another contest.
Awards: First Prize is $1,000 and publication in the Fall 2013 issue (#8); Second Prize is $250 and publication; Third Prize is $100 and publication. All finalists receive notation in the Fall 2013 issue and are considered for publication in the magazine.
Submission Fee: $15 for each entry.
Deadline: July 31, 2013.
Judging: The contest will be judged by the magazine’s editorial staff.
How to enter: Entries are accepted only via our Online Submission Form. Mail-in submissions will not be reviewed.
Guidelines
- All entries must be unpublished, either in print or online, and between 1,500 and 8,000 words.
- The entry fee is $15, payable through our online submission system.
- We accept online submissions only using our online submissions form. If you have technical difficulties using the form, please contact us at support@northwindmagazine.com.
- You may send only one story per entry.
- You may enter as many times as you like. Each separate entry requires its own entry fee of $15. (Please refer to the previous guideline.)
- All entries will be considered for publication.
- Previously published stories and stories forthcoming at other publications cannot be considered. This includes online journals and other websites. Entries may be simultaneous submissions, but the entry fee is nonrefundable if the story is accepted elsewhere. Please notify us immediately to withdraw a story that is taken elsewhere.
- Winners and finalists will be announced to the public on or before August 31, 2013.
- All writers who enter will be notified by email of the judges’ decisions, which will be final. The judges reserve the option to declare ties and to designate and award only as many winners and/or finalists as are appropriate to the quality of contest entries and of work represented in the magazine.
- Current employees or others affiliated with Chain Bridge Press, LLC, or Northwind Magazine, are ineligible for consideration or publication. In addition, writers who have a strong personal or professional relationship with the editorial staff are asked to abstain from entering the contest in order to prevent a conflict of interest.
- We comply with the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) Code of Ethics.
Contest Code of Ethics
CLMP’s community of independent literary publishers believe that ethical contests serve our shared goal: to connect writers and readers by publishing exceptional writing. Intent to act ethically, clarity of guidelines, and transparency of process form the foundation of an ethical contest. To that end, we agree (1) to conduct our contests as ethically as possible and to address any unethical behavior on the part of our readers, judges, or editors; (2) to provide clear and specific contest guidelines defining conflict of interest for all parties involved; and (3) to make the mechanics of our selection process available to the public. This Code recognizes that different contest models produce different results, but that each model can be run ethically. We have adopted this Code to reinforce our integrity and dedication as a publishing community and to ensure that our contests contribute to a vibrant literary heritage.
