CV2 magazine has created a new poetry contest exclusively for writers under the age of 35. The YOUNG BUCK poetry prize will be awarded to the author of the single best submitted poem, along with $1000 and publication in CV2. Three honourable mentions will also be awarded, each with a uniqueWriter’s Toolkit prize pack.  

Entries may be submitted by email to contests@contemporaryverse2.ca or by mail to the CV2office addressed to “Young Buck Poetry Prize”. An entry fee of $26 includes a 1-year subscription (or renewal) to CV2 magazine. Multiple entries are allowed for an additional fee of $16 per poem. Entry fees may be paid online through PayPal or by mail with a cheque or money order.

Your poem will not be accepted until payment has been received.

 

The 2013 judge is Johanna Skibsrud

Johanna Skibsrud

Johanna Skibsrud is the author of the 2010 Scotiabank Giller Prize winning novel, The Sentimentalists (Douglas and MacIntyre 2010), a collection of short fiction, This Will Be Difficult to Explain and other stories (Hamish Hamilton 2011), and two collections of poetry, Late Nights With Wild Cowboys (Gaspereau 2008) and I Do Not Think that I Could Love a Human Being (Gaspereau 2010).  Originally from Nova Scotia, Canada, Johanna currently lives in Tucson, Arizona where she is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Arizona and is working to complete a second novel.

Full contest rules

  • Participating writers must be under the age of 35 at the time of the contest deadline. All entrants must be willing to provide proof of age if requested. 
  • Open to Canadian and International poets, however the subscription term for international entrants is reduced to 6 months to reflect international shipping costs. 
  • Entry fee: $26 (first entry, includes subscription), $16 (subsequent entries) 
  • Each poem is not to exceed 48 lines. 
  • Deadline for all contest entries: October 1, 2013. 
  • Do not identify yourself on your entry. Enclose a cover sheet with your name, address, telephone number, the title(s) of your piece(s) and line count. On occasion, CV2 magazine makes subscriber names and addresses available to external organizations. If you do not wish to receive such mailings, please state this clearly on your cover sheet. 
  • Your entry must be formatted on 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper and clipped, not stapled, single spaced using 12 point font. 
  • Electronic submissions must be sent in .doc, .docx, .rtf format and attached to the submission email. Cover sheet info as outlined above may be provided in the body of the email. DO NOT paste your poem submission into the body of the email, as this compromises anonymity. 
  • Entries will not be returned. 
  • Winners will be notified by email (or telephone) and results will be available on the CV2 website in early January 2014. 
  • Each piece must be original, unpublished, not submitted elsewhere for publication or broadcast, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or broadcast, nor entered simultaneously in any other contest or competition for which it is also eligible to win a prize. 
  • Winning pieces will be published in CV2 magazine, with authors paid for publication.
