Kalamu ya Salaam's information blog

We were in St. Lucia at a festival. He as a performer. I as a journalist. We hit it off and talked, and talked. And laughed. And told tales to each other.

I remember a Los Angeles story. When Hugh was living there–this was way before he became an international star–he recalled how he was really, really physically fit. And he would puff out his cheeks and mimic riding a bicycle because they didn’t have a car and instead biked everywhere they had to go across the vast landscape.

Here Hugh is blowing his horn and singing–dig Hugh’s Louis Armstrong “Sleepytime Down South” shout outs–as he duets with Larry Willis, an old compadre from his college days in New York. Also, you can hear an extremely informative radio interview of Hugh and Larry here.

Enjoy.
