Enter the Maine Review‘s
Annual Short Story Contest!
The Maine Review is currently accepting entries for our short story contest, which offers publication and a Grand Prize of $200 for the winning story. Winners of Honorable Mention awards will receive a free one-year subscription to the Review, and all winners will be published in our first fiction collection, Juxtaposition. All contest entries will be considered for publication in future issues of the Review, and all writers who enter will receive a free electronic copy of the Fall 2014 issue.
The final judge for the contest will be Darcy Scott, author of Margel’s Madness, Hunter Huntress, and the Island Mystery Series, and winner of the 2013 Indie Book Award and the 2013 IPPY Fiction Award.
We suggest that you read a copy of the Review or check out our Sneak Peek before submitting your writing. You don’t have to be a Maine resident, or write about Maine, in order to win the contest or have your work considered for publication. Previous issues have included works from authors in many different states and countries. Find out more about what we publish.
Please see our guidelines below. We look for quality writing with a strong point of view, and we adhere to the CLMP code of ethics for administering a literary contest.
Writers’ Guidelines:
Deadline: April 15th, 2015
Format:
All entries must be in a 12-point standard-serif font such as Times New Roman or similar, and single-spaced with pages numbered. Send your submission in Microsoft Word-compatible format. The title of the document should be the title of the story or essay.
Do not include your name on any pages of the story or essay. Include your name, contact information, and title(s) on a separate cover page as part of your submission, to facilitate the blind judging process. Please note that entries without a cover page may be disqualified.
Word Limit: 5,000 words
Copyrights: All submissions must be your own original work. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere. You are also responsible for notifying any other literary magazines you may have submitted your piece to if we notify you that we’d like to publish it. We will respond to your submission within eight weeks of the contest deadline.
Entry Fees:
The entry fee for all contests is $10 per entry. You can submit electronically and pay via PayPal below, or submit by mail by downloading a mail-in form here. There is no limit to the number of entries you may submit.
NOTE: If your payment is made under a name other than your own (for example, as a business entity with no apparent connection to you), please make a note on your cover page as to what name your payment was made under.
Winners of the contest will be published in Juxtaposition, and will receive a contributor copy of the collection when it’s published. All submissions will be considered for publication in future issues. Notifications of winners will be via an e-mail to all contestants and posting on this website. Entrants are not added to any “mailing lists,” and we never sell or share your information.
Please record your Paypal Transaction ID# when you make your payment, so you can insert it in the correct box on the form. Entries submitted without a valid PayPal Transaction ID will be disqualified.
After payment, click on “Return to the Maine Review” to go to the submit form, fill out your contact info, and attach your work. If you need more time, you can also submit your work hereafter payment.
The contest will close on April 15th, 2015.
Thanks again for your interest in the Maine Review,
and best of luck!
