Tillie Olsen<\/a> was the author of the short story collection \u201cTell Me a Riddle,\u201d the story \u201cRequa I\u201d as seen in Best American Short Stories 1971<\/em> and several journalistic pieces from the 1930s about the struggle for economic justice. All of these works have been newly gathered by the University of Nebraska Press \u2013 Bison Books.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Olsen was born in 1912 on a tenant farm in Nebraska, the daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants. Early in her life, she began crusading for worker rights, jailed for organizing packinghouse workers and for participating in strikes. She continued working as an activist her entire life, especially in her San Francisco community. She and her partner Jack Olsen suffered under McCarthy\u2019s witch hunt. Olsen died at the age of 95\u2014a mother, grandmother, award-winning writer, feminist, and human rights and anti-war activist.<\/span><\/p>\n Olsen\u2019s family has graciously given The Tishman Review<\/em> permission to name our short story contest in honor of one of our heroes, Tillie Olsen.<\/span><\/p>\n Entries should consist of unpublished (including online and personal blogs) short stories not longer than 5,000 words in length. Manuscripts and file names must not contain any identifying information. Please double-space and paginate your entry. Please use only one space after a period. All entries must be received through Submittable<\/a> with the $15.00 entry fee per story. Writers may enter as many stories as they wish, but each one must be entered separately and with the $15.00 fee. Please ensure that no identifying information is on the manuscript or in the filename.<\/span><\/p>\n The final judge is Linda LeGarde Grover<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n Linda LeGarde Grover<\/strong> is the author of The Dance Boots<\/em> (University of Georgia Press, 2010) , which has received the Flannery O\u2019Connor Award for Short Fiction as well as the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize. Her novel The Road Back to Sweetgrass<\/em> (University of Minnesota Press, 2014) received the Wordcraft Circle of Indigenous Writers and Storytellers 2015 Fiction Award, and her poetry collection The Sky Watched: Poems of Ojibwe Lives,<\/em> the Red Mountain Press 2015 Editor\u2019s Award. Linda is a professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth and a member of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe. Her forthcoming essay collection Onigamiising: Seasons of an Ojibwe Year<\/em> (University of Minnesota Press) is scheduled for release in September of 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n Please only include a cover letter in the Comments Section area on Submittable.
