Klein Fellowship <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"lede\" data-mce-mark=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\">in Creative Writing &amp; Social Justice<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Michael F. Klein, a 1976 graduate of the University of Baltimore, has established and funded a fellowship award that promotes an awareness of social justice through creative writing and also provides the winner an opportunity to gain teaching experience. The fellowship will be awarded to a student whose writing demonstrates artistic merit and a strong interest in the pursuit of social justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Fellowship Award<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The winner of the Klein Fellowship will receive a three-year tuition waiver and a graduate teaching assistantship with stipend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">All applicants for the University of Baltimore\u2019s M.F.A. in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts program are eligible to compete. The winner must begin the program in fall 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Application<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To apply for the fellowship, include with your writing portfolio a 500-word essay discussing how your writing reflects your interest in social issues (race, gender identification, politics, etc.) and your commitment to social justice. The essay should refer to specific examples in your writing portfolio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Deadline and Submission Procedure<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Applicants for the fellowship must apply for admission to the program by Feb. 15, 2017, and must submit their social justice essay as part of that application.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span class=\"lede\"><a name=\"Assistantships\"><\/a>Teaching Assistantships<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">First-year students are eligible to apply for a Klein Family School of Communication Design (KFSCD) teaching aide position. Students receiving this award will receive a nominal stipend to assist a professor with a KFSCD undergraduate class. This part-time position does not offer tuition remission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Students will gain hands-on experience in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"first\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">developing syllabi and materials<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">mentoring students<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">teaching classes (or parts of classes)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"last\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">evaluating student work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Students in their second and third year who have successfully completed CWPA 761 Teaching Writing are eligible to apply for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubalt.edu\/cas\/undergraduate-majors-and-minors\/university-writing-program\/teaching-assistantships.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">University Writing Program<\/a>. In exchange for a tuition waiver and a small stipend, each GTA will teach two sections of First-Year Composition (WRIT 101 and WRIT100) per semester.
