We will be selecting between nine and fifteen writers in 2016 and during the one-year fellowship period grantees will receive:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022\u00a0A grant of $5,000<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022\u00a0The option to engage in a mentorship with a selected freelance editor\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022\u00a0The opportunity to meet with agents who represent new writers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022\u00a0A Center for Fiction membership that includes borrowing privileges for our collection of new fiction and fiction-related titles<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022\u00a0Free admission to all Center events for one year, including tickets to our First Novel\u00a0Fete, and Benefit Dinner as space allows<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022\u00a030% discount on tuition at select writing workshops at the Center<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022\u00a0Two public readings as part of our annual program of events and inclusion in an anthology distributed to industry professionals<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022\u00a0A professional headshot with a photographer for personal publicity use \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Criteria<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Applicants must be current residents of one of the five boroughs, and must remain in New York City for the entire year of the fellowship. Students in degree-granting programs are not eligible to apply, even if the focus of study is not directly related to writing. This program supports emerging writers whose work shows promise of excellence. Applicants can be of any age, but must be in the early stages of their careers as fiction writers and will not have had the support needed to achieve major recognition for their work. We define \u201cemerging writer\u201d as someone who has not yet had a novel or short story collection published by either a major or independent publisher and who is also not currently under contract to a publisher for a work of fiction. Eligible applicants may have had stories or novel excerpts published in magazines, literary journals or online, but this is not a requirement.<strong>\u00a0If at any point during the judging process an applicant signs a contract for publication or accepts an offer to study in a degree-granting program, he or she must alert us immediately to have the application pulled from consideration.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Application Guidelines<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Applications are due via our online Submission Manager by\u00a0<strong>11pm on February 29, 2016<\/strong>.\u00a0Please follow these instructions carefully as incomplete applications will not be read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Please submit a fiction writing sample, not to exceed 7,500 words, submitted as a double-spaced Word document or pdf through our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforfiction.org\/submissions\/index.php?page=login\">Submission Manager<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0The submission must include page numbers. The writing sample may be either a novel excerpt or a complete short story (Multiple stories\/excerpts in one submission are acceptable as long as the total word count does not exceed 7,500. If submitting multiple pieces for your sample, please combine them into one attachment).\u00a0<strong>Please do not include any personal or identifying information on your writing sample.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Once you have received an email confirmation of your sample submission, email a PDF or jpeg scan showing proof of residency and a one-page resume to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:sara@centerforfiction.org\">sara@centerforfiction.org<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>A New York driver\u2019s license or non-driver\u2019s ID card is the preferred proof of residency. A PDF of a current utility bill may also be used to show residency. If you are a full-time resident of New York City, but do not have any of these items, please e-mail\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:sara@centerforfiction.org\">sara@centerforfiction.org<\/a>\u00a0to discuss other proof of residency that may be provided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em><strong>Please note that we do not wish to receive application cover letters.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Instead, please include your mailing address and phone number in the email with your proof of residency and resume attachments.
