\nSaturday 24 October 2015, Birmingham City University<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\nGlobalization, and the various nationalist, religious and cultural <\/span><\/section>\nresistances to it, might be said to be the paradigm of the present. <\/span><\/section>\nThis has had, and continues to have, wide-ranging ramifications <\/span><\/section>\nfor Comparative Literature. Is the discipline to be subsumed <\/span><\/section>\nunder the broader economic, political and cultural spread of <\/span><\/section>\nGlobalization? Or can it offer points of resistance and critique \u2013 <\/span><\/section>\nalternative ways of understanding the spread of culture and <\/span><\/section>\nlanguage in the twenty-first century? Comparative Literature <\/span><\/section>\ncould be said to offer an historicizing view of cultural exchanges, <\/span><\/section>\nmovements and clashes which are not primarily economic; but <\/span><\/section>\nit may also be understood to have contributed to, or be complicit <\/span><\/section>\nin, the spread of economically-motivated globalization. Perhaps <\/span><\/section>\nwe might think in terms of \u2018globalizations\u2019 and \u2018comparative <\/span><\/section>\nliteratures\u2019, and view their multiple and multiplying processes, <\/span><\/section>\nintentions and effects, as still very much in progress and to be <\/span><\/section>\naccounted for. These issues have been raised in recent <\/span><\/section>\nscholarship, for instance in Haun Saussy\u2019s edited collection <\/span><\/section>\nComparative Literature in an Age of Globalization (2006), and <\/span><\/section>\nthis seminar seeks to further develop and widen the scope of the <\/span><\/section>\ndebate.\u00a0<\/span>Contributions are welcome on any aspect of literature <\/span><\/section>\nand related disciplines, including drama, visual arts and <\/span><\/section>\ncinema.
