XL Recordings<\/a>\u00a0recently reflected on their past 25 years as an independent label with the release of a compilation album, titled\u00a0Pay Close Attention<\/a><\/em>, late last summer. Beyond looking back at their game-changing releases (from\u00a0Tyler, the Creator,\u00a0M.I.A.,\u00a0ADELE,\u00a0Radiohead, and more), XL continues to look ahead with impressive new artist signings from\u00a0FKA Twigs<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0Jungle<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Kaytranada<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

An exciting new name on their roster is\u00a0Ibeyi<\/a>.\u00a0The 19-year-old French-Cuban sisters make music influenced by their\u00a0Yoruban roots, the directness of hip-hop, and the experimentation of electronic music.\u00a0Last October,\u00a0they put up a captivating video<\/a>\u00a0of themselves covering\u00a0Jay\u00a0Electronica’s “Better In Tune With the Infinite,” showing their incredible vocal abilities, passionate musicianship, and sisterly chemistry. In discussing the melting pot of their sound, Ibeyi told\u00a0Pigeons and Planes<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0“It is hard for us to describe our music. If we had to, we\u2019d say we do contemporary Negro Spiritual, since our music is based on prayer.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Since releasing mesmerizing videos for the songs\u00a0“Oya,”<\/a>\u00a0“River,”<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0“Ghosts,”<\/a>\u00a0Ibeyi have announced that their debut album will be out Feb. 17. In advance of the album, they’ve shared a\u00a0mixtape\u00a0with us that includes songs by\u00a0Jay Electronica,\u00a0Childish Gambino, and\u00a0Kendrick Lamar, showing just how much they love and are influenced by hip-hop, soul, and R&B.<\/span><\/p>\n

Richard Russell, founder of XL Recordings and producer of the\u00a0Ibeyi<\/em>\u00a0album, says, “The thread of music Lisa and Naomi chose for their\u00a0mixtape, from\u00a0Yoruban\u00a0chants to Nina Simone,\u00a0Lauryn\u00a0Hill, and Earl Sweatshirt, is deep but very\u00a0listenable.” Enjoy the EE-BEY-EE\u00a0mixtape below.<\/span><\/p>\n
