Like most of America (most of the world, really), you likely won’t get the opportunity to see\u00a0Tony Award\u00a0winner\u00a0Audra McDonald’s\u00a0live acclaimed performance as\u00a0Billie Holiday,\u00a0in the current\u00a0Broadway\u00a0production of\u00a0Lanie Robertson’s\u00a0Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill<\/i>. So here’s the next best thing…<\/span><\/p>\n

McDonald, as Billie Holiday,\u00a0in\u00a0Lady Day\u00a0at Emerson’s Bar and Grill<\/i>,\u00a0appeared on\u00a0The Colbert Report<\/i>\u00a0two nights ago, and offered audiences a look at the Broadway performance they’re missing, as the late blues singer – a performance for which she’s been nominated for a Tony Award this year (Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play); and if she wins, it’ll be her 6th, giving her\u00a0the record for most Tonys won by an actor – a title she currently shares with\u00a0Julie Harris\u00a0and\u00a0Angela Lansbury.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Broadway production, which was originally scheduled as a limited, 10-week engagement, will now continue through\u00a0August 10\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Circle in the Square Theatre, so you’ve got a few more months, if this is a performance you were keen on seeing.<\/span><\/p>\n

The production\u00a0is set in 1959 in a seedy Philadelphia bar, and relives Billie Holiday’s last performance, taking place only four months before her death at age 44.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
