The Nelligan Prize for Short Fiction<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Nelligan Prize for Short Fiction was established in 2004 in memory of Liza Nelligan, a writer, editor, and friend of many in Colorado State University\u2019s English Department, where she received her master\u2019s degree in literature in 1992. By giving an award to the author of an outstanding short story each year, we hope to honor Nelligan\u2019s life, her passion for writing, and her love of fiction. The Nelligan Prize is offered annually. The winner receives a $2,000 honorarium and the story is published in the fall\/winter issue of\u00a0Colorado Review.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

General Guidelines:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. $2,000\u00a0will be awarded for the best short story, which will be published in the fall\/winter 2014 issue of\u00a0Colorado Review.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. This year\u2019s\u00a0final judge is Kent Haruf; friends and students (current & former) of the judge are not eligible to compete, nor are Colorado State University employees, students, or alumni.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Entry fee is $15\u00a0per story;<\/em>\u00a0there is no limit on the number of entries you may submit.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Stories must be\u00a0previously unpublished.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. There are no theme restrictions, but\u00a0stories must be under 50 pages.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. All manuscripts must be typed and double-spaced.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Contest opens\u00a0January 1, 2014.<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Deadline is the postmark of\u00a0March 14, 2014.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Winner will be announced by July 2014.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. All submissions will be considered for publication.<\/span><\/li>\n
  11. You do not need to be a Colorado or US resident to enter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    To submit\u00a0online:<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. The story title and your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address should be entered in the cover letter field, separate from your story. Be sure your name is not anywhere in the story itself (for example, in the header or footer).<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. The fee to enter online is\u00a0$17\u00a0($2 goes to the good people at Submittable; in most cases, it will be less expensive to enter online than by mail).<\/span><\/li>\n

      To submit via\u00a0regular mail:<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Include\u00a0two cover sheets: on the first, print your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and the story title; on the second, print only the story title. Your name should not appear anywhere else on the manuscript.<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Enclose a check for $15 for each story. Checks should be made out to\u00a0Colorado Review.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
      3. You may submit multiple stories in the same envelope, and the check can be made out for the total.<\/span><\/li>\n
      4. Provide SASE for contest results.<\/span><\/li>\n
      5. Manuscripts will not be returned. Please do\u00a0not\u00a0<\/em>enclose extra postage for return of manuscript.<\/span><\/li>\n
