\nAsheville, NC 28802<\/span><\/p>\nThe editors at\u00a0Asheville Poetry Review<\/em>\u00a0are pleased to announce the William Matthews Poetry Prize recipients for 2013. Patricia Smith was the final judge.<\/span><\/p>\nBart Rawlinson<\/strong>, from Forestville, CA, was awarded first prize for his poem, \u201cJonah and Mr. Bones,\u201d and will receive $1000, plus publication in the next issue of\u00a0Asheville Poetry Review<\/em>\u00a0(Vol. 20, Issue 23, 2013), which will be released in November, 2013.<\/span><\/p>\nSecond prize is awarded to\u00a0Shelley Puhak<\/strong>\u00a0of Baltimore, MD for her poem, \u201cOn High School Reunions and Hurricane Agnes.\u201d She will receive $250 as well as publication.<\/span><\/p>\nDavid Brendan Hopes<\/strong>, from Asheville, NC, was the third prize recipient for his poem \u201cSpade,\u201d and he will also be published in our next issue.<\/span><\/p>\nAll three authors will be featured at a reading at Malaprop\u2019s Bookstore in Asheville, NC this summer.<\/span><\/p>\nBart Rawlinson<\/strong>\u00a0is the recipient of the Joseph Henry Jackson Literary Award, the Robert Browning Prize for Dramatic Monologue, and the Eugene Ruggles Poetry Prize, among other awards. He is an Associate Professor of English at Mendocino College in Northern California. He lives in Forestville with his partner Bill Boucher.<\/span><\/p>\nShelley Puhak<\/strong>\u2019s second collection,\u00a0Guinevere in Baltimore<\/em>, was selected by Charles Simic for the Anthony Hecht Prize and is forthcoming in fall 2013. Her first collection,\u00a0Stalin in Aruba<\/em>, was awarded the 2010 Towson Prize for Literature. Her poems have appeared in many journals, including\u00a0Alaska Quarterly Review<\/em>,\u00a0Beloit Poetry Journal<\/em>,\u00a0Carolina Quarterly<\/em>, and\u00a0New South<\/em>. She is assistant professor at Notre Dame of Maryland University and lives in Baltimore with her husband and son.<\/span><\/p>\nDavid Brendan Hopes<\/strong>\u00a0grew up in Northeastern Ohio, and has come to rest in western North Carolina, where he is Professor of Literature and Language at UNC Asheville. He has written extensively about both nature and art, and is currently pursuing a career as a playwright, which the skills of a poet make easier than it might otherwise be. Winner of the Juniper and Saxifrage prizes in poetry, he is founder and artistic director of the Black Swan Theater.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAsheville Poetry Review<\/em>\u00a0will accept entries for the fourth annual\u00a0<ahref=”http: www.ashevillepoetryreview.com=”” 2004=”” issue-14=”” to-bill-matthews”=””>William Matthews Poetry Prize from September 15, 2013 through January 15, 2014.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
