On the silver screen, it\u2019s boom time for a brand new genre: the Somali pirate movie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">There&#8217;s \u201cCaptain Phillips,\u201d the dramatization of the 2009 Navy Seal rescue of an American cargo ship, starring Tom Hanks as the titular captain. The high-profile movie has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=captainphillips.htm\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">held steady at No. 2<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at the box office since debuting earlier this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"2013-10-25-CAPTAINPHILLIPS_original.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/images.huffingtonpost.com\/2013-10-25-CAPTAINPHILLIPS_original.jpg\" width=\"648\" height=\"433\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><small><em>A still from &#8220;Captain Phillips,&#8221; starring Tom Hanks.<\/em><\/small><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Then there&#8217;s the slow-burning Danish import, \u201cA Hijacking,\u201d aka \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2013\/07\/15\/a-hijacking-the-somali-pirate-movie-without-tom-hanks-is-fantastic.html\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Somali pirate movie without Tom Hanks<\/span><\/a>.&#8221; Two recent documentaries &#8212; \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1981690\/\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stolen Seas<\/span><\/a>,\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2013\/04\/22\/in-the-project-the-stormy-battle-to-take-on-somali-pirates.html\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Project<\/span><\/a>\u201d &#8212; tackle Somali piracy specifically. A feature version of an award-winning short about Somali pirates, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2061682\/\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fishing Without Nets<\/span><\/a>,\u201d is in the works, as is \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/screenrant.com\/high-value-target-navy-seals-somali-pirates\/\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">High Value Target<\/span><\/a>,\u201d a \u201chigh concept\u201d action movie about yet another U.S. Special Ops team defeating yet another band of Somali pirates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"2013-10-25-fishing.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/images.huffingtonpost.com\/2013-10-25-fishing.jpg\" width=\"606\" height=\"404\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><small><em>A still from the short &#8220;Fishing Without Nets,&#8221; winner of the Sundance Festival&#8217;s 2012 Jury Prize.<\/em><\/small><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s a perfect storyline, commercially speaking,&#8221; says Cyrus Mody, assistant director of the International Maritime Bureau, which tracks and publicizes piracy statistics worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Modern piracy\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=SlDe_cmh3mgC&amp;pg=PA30&amp;lpg=PA30&amp;dq=1970s+thai+pirates+vietnamese&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=8pVInH21tR&amp;sig=t9NTbewuIFYhHUjEODlrvV1_EjY&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=IdFqUqaYG8jKkAfTtYCwAg&amp;ved=0CEYQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&amp;q=1970s%20thai%20pirates%20vietnamese&amp;f=false\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dates to the 1970s<\/span><\/a>, when East Asian fishermen began to systematically attack Vietnamese refugees to Thailand. The Internet has enabled news of more recent attacks to travel farther, and the news is worse now, Mody says. Since 2008, the IMB has found that Somali pirates are brutalizing hostages more often and for longer stretches, for reasons observers aren&#8217;t able to pinpoint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">That brutality has since captivated Hollywood. &#8220;There\u2019s a sort of a natural time period that it takes for a big news story to turn into a film,\u201d says Bruce Nash, founder of the movie consultancy firm Nash Information Services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Columbia Pictures, for example, snatched the rights to the 2009 hijacking\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/insidemovies.ew.com\/2009\/05\/28\/maersk-alabama\/\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">mere months after it happened<\/span><\/a>, but it took two more years before the real Captain Phillips wrote the memoir on which the movie is based.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"2013-10-25-CAPTAINPHILLIPS_original1.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/images.huffingtonpost.com\/2013-10-25-CAPTAINPHILLIPS_original1.jpg\" width=\"648\" height=\"432\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><small><em>Another still from &#8220;Captain Phillips.&#8221;<\/em><\/small><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Modern pirates tend to be poor young men employed by drug lords. They hail from countries with crumbling governments, like Somalia. Their victims &#8212; if they escape at all &#8212; return traumatized, with tales better fit for a horror movie than a thriller: stories of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2091548\/Somali-pirates-chop-hostage-captain-s-arm-elicit-2m-ransom.html\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hacked-off limbs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and being\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/5b0d5558-9086-11e0-9531-00144feab49a.html\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hung naked from meat hooks<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in a ship&#8217;s freezer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">As a result, the movies based on these events aren&#8217;t the charming swashbuckling romances of old, part of a genre that&#8217;s been around since Douglas Fairbanks Sr.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nlZQX1-C7U0\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sliced his ship\u2019s sails<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the 1926 silent film \u201cThe Black Pirate.\u201d Say the word &#8220;pirate&#8221; today, and &#8220;finally, not everyone thinks of Johnny Depp,\u201d Mody says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Of course, what he calls &#8220;movieness&#8221; still pervades Hollywood depictions of real-world events. &#8220;Captain Phillips&#8221; has been criticized for glossing over\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/paul-greengrass-100-percent-stands-behind-captain-phillips-accuracy\/\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">complicating facts<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2013\/oct\/23\/captain-phillips-america-awesome-tom-hanks\" target=\"_hplink\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">valorizing the U.S. Navy<\/span><\/a>.
