Submissions for the LEE SMITH NOVEL PRIZE are open!
NEW DEADLINE–November 30, 2013!
Carolina Wren Press will choose one unpublished novel to receive the Lee Smith Novel Prize, an award of $1,000 and publication in honor of esteemed Southern author, literary mentor, and teacher Lee Smith. The award will be presented to a novel by an author from, living in, or writing about the American South–authors need only meet one of these qualifications, not all three. It is our hope to find and promote novelists from the South and their novels and, in the process, to explore and expand the definition of Southern literature. Electronic submissions will be accepted from June 15, 2013 through November 30, 2013 via Submittable using the following link:https://carolinawrenpress.submittable.com/submit. Submissions must be original, previously unpublished novels, written by one person, in English, at least 50,000 words in length.

We will open submissions for the Doris Bakwin Award again in January 2014, with a submission deadline of 3/31/2014.
Our last Doris Bakwin Award for Writing by a Woman took entries with a postmark deadline of 3/15/2012. Chantel Acevedo’s A Falling Star was selected by Moira Crone as winner of the 2012/3 Doris Bakwin Award for Writing by a Woman. More about the winner here…
CAROLINA WREN PRESS POETRY SERIES
Submissions for the Carolina Wren Press Poetry Series closed on March 31, 2013. Submissions will reopen in late 2014.

RAVI SHANKAR is the founding editor and Executive Director of Drunken Boat, one of the oldest electronic journals of the arts. He has published or edited eight books and chapbooks of poetry and essays, including the 2010 National Poetry Review Prize winner, “Deepening Groove,” called the work of “one of America’s finest younger poets,” by Connecticut Poet Laureate Dick Allen, and “Instrumentality,” named a finalist for the Connecticut Book Awards. Along with Tina Chang and Nathalie Handal, he edited W.W. Norton’s Language for a New Century: Contemporary Poetry from Asia, the Middle East & Beyond, called “a beautiful achievement for world literature” by Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer. He has won a Pushcart Prize, been featured in The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Academy of American Poets and the Chronicle of Higher Education. He has appeared as a commentator on the BBC and NPR, received fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, the Djerassi Resident Artist Program, and the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, and has performed his work around the world, including at the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival and for PEN World Voices. He has taught at Queens College, Fairfield University, City University of Hong Kong and for the Wesleyan, Stonecoast and Jackson Hole Writers Conferences. He is currently Chairman of the Connecticut Young Writers Trust, an Associate Professor of English at CCSU and he teaches in the international MFA program at City University of Hong Kong.
