Talib Kweli. “State of Grace” is a Poetic Ode

to All the Disillusioned Daughters

of the Hip Hop Generation.

BY SUPERSELECTED

In an animated video illustrated by Daniel Cordero, Talib Kweli’s “State of Grace” featuring Abby Dobson literally draws out what it’s truly like to be a woman of the hip-hop generation. What it’s like to be a woman who listens to hip-hop music who has “lost count of how many whores she was called today”. This woman “ain’t never been a bitch or a ‘ho but she used to sing along when she heard it in a song”.

The woman grows up, she she goes to college, she navigates the world around her and she grows to question the loyalty she’s expected to have to the men who constantly disrespect her. She realizes that she can never be equal to the men who perform on stage, her voice will never be heard in the same way theirs will.

Talib Kweli also cites the lack of female rappers as well as the tendency of female rappers to become successful by giving their male counterparts a run for the money when it comes to misogyny. The song even makes mention of male hip-hop artists who act out their misogynistic lyrics in real life. In the end, our animated heroine reaches her “state of grace” by divorcing herself from what she hears on the radio. To put it simply, “she don’t love it no more”.
