Beneath the spectacular subhead \u201cDoom and glory of knowing who you are,\u201d Baldwin \u2014 who had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2015\/04\/10\/a-rap-on-race-james-baldwin-reading\/\">read his way from Harlem to literary celebrity<\/a> \u2014 considers the unparalleled empathic gift of reading:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was Dostoevsky and Dickens who taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who ever had been alive. Only if we face these open wounds in ourselves can we understand them in other people.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A year after he formulated his abiding ideas on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2014\/08\/20\/james-baldwin-the-creative-process\/\">the artist\u2019s role as a disruptor of society<\/a>, and more than a century after Emerson insisted that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2015\/01\/26\/emerson-circles\/\">\u201conly as far as [people] are unsettled is there any hope for them,\u201d<\/a> Baldwin considers this vital commitment to generative unsettlement as the central animating force of the creative spirit:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">An artist is a sort of emotional or spiritual historian. His role is to make you realize the doom and glory of knowing who you are and what you are. He has to tell, because nobody else in the world <em>can<\/em> tell, what it is like to be alive. All I\u2019ve ever wanted to do is tell that, I\u2019m not trying to solve anybody\u2019s problems, not even my own.
