In addition to what peaked as a\u00a0Category 5\u00a0storm, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/broken-promise-levees-failed-new-orleans-180956326\/?no-ist\">massive failure of NOLA&#8217;s\u00a0levees<\/a>, subsequent flooding of most of the city, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/storm\/etc\/cron.html\">deadly<\/a>, often\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2015\/08\/katrina-ten-years-later-michael-brown-121782_Page2.html#.Vd8w7dNViko\">politically motivated<\/a>\u00a0decision-making that marred the\u00a0local, state and federal response guaranteed that there would be widespread loss of New Orleanian\u00a0lives, homes, neighborhoods and culture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And then there\u00a0was the aftermath:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ftw.usatoday.com\/2015\/08\/refuge-of-last-resort-five-days-inside-the-superdome-for-hurricane-katrina\">The Superdome.<\/a>\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/story?id=3442801\">refusal of\u00a0insurance companies<\/a>\u00a0to cover flood damage.\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/katrina\/index.ssf\/2015\/08\/katrina_danziger_police.html\">calculated\u00a0police shootings of six black men<\/a>\u00a0on the Danziger Bridge and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/story\/nopd-order-to-shoot-looters-hurricane-katrina\/\">accusations of an actual policy<\/a>\u00a0of shooting alleged looters.\u00a0The thousands of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/23168160\/ns\/us_news-life\/t\/cdc-tests-confirm-fema-trailers-are-toxic\/\">toxic\u00a0FEMA trailers<\/a>distributed and then\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grist.org\/politics\/people-are-still-living-in-femas-toxic-katrina-trailers-and-they-likely-have-no-idea\/\">resold<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0poor people. The news that people incarcerated at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2005\/09\/21\/new-orleans-prisoners-abandoned-floodwaters\">Templeman III<\/a>prison had been effectively abandoned and some being treated at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/30\/magazine\/30doctors.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\">Memorial Medical Center<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/30\/magazine\/30doctors.html?pagewanted=all\">had been killed<\/a>. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/katrina\/index.ssf\/2015\/08\/new_orleans_public_housing_dem.html\">demolition of major public housing projects<\/a>. The firing of thousands of public school teachers and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/articles\/2009\/12\/23\/charter-schools-rise-in-new-orleans-after-hurricane-katrina\">transition<\/a>\u00a0into a majority-charter system. And the list goes on. And on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The story of Hurricane Katrina can never be fully told.
