Maidique Campus<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Miami, Florida<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The Cuban Research Institute (CRI) of Florida International University continues its\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">tradition of convening scholars and other persons interested in the study of Cuba and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Cuban Americans by announcing its 10th Conference. CRI\u00a0encourage the submission of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">panels and papers concentrating on any aspects of the main conference theme, but will\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">consider all submissions relevant to the history, economy, politics, culture, society, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">creative expression of Cuba and its diaspora.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In 1893, the Cuban patriot, journalist, and poet Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed published his famous article,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201cMi raza\u201d (\u201cMy Race\u201d). In it he argued against fomenting racial divisions within the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">context of Cuba\u2019s independence struggle from Spain. His axiom that \u201cman is more than\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">white, more than mulatto, more than black\u201d has been extensively cited since then.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Although Mart\u00ed\u2019s thought has been praised for promoting racial integration and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">equality, scholars and activists have criticized the practical implications of his model of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">racial democracy in Cuba and elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><strong>Guidelines for Presenting Panels and Papers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Although CRI\u00a0prefers panel proposals, they\u00a0will attempt to group individual papers in sessions according to shared themes. Panels will ideally include four paper presenters, a chair (who may be one of the presenters), and a discussant. Panels may feature five paper presentations if they do not include a discussant. Participants may perform two roles at the conference (chair, discussant, roundtable participant, or paper presenter) but may not present more than one paper. Submissions may be in English or Spanish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Proposals for panels or roundtables must include a general description of the theme and one-page abstracts of each participant\u2019s paper. Each presentation will be limited to 20 minutes. The following information must be submitted for each participant: full name, role in the session, academic affiliation, title of presentation, preferred addresses, office, cell, and home phone numbers, fax, and email address. Persons wishing to submit individual papers must present a one-page abstract and all pertinent personal data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><strong>The deadline for submission of all paper and panel proposals is 31 October 2014<\/strong>.<strong>Notifications of acceptance (or refusal) will be sent out by 1 December 2014. An acknowledgement of receipt will be sent.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The Tenth Conference on Cuban and Cuban-American Studies takes Mart\u00ed\u2019s dictum as a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">cue for further academic inquiry and public debate. Their\u00a0main theme, Racial Politics in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Cuba and the Americas, invites comparisons between Cuban experiences of race and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">those of other Latin American and Caribbean peoples (such as Puerto Ricans,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Dominicans, Haitians, and Brazilians), as well as their diasporic communities. Although\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">CRI\u00a0emphasizes the racial politics that emerged from the African-European encounter, they\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">welcome analyses focusing on other racialized groups in Cuba and the Americas.
