southern cali review

The Southern California Review is proud to announce that we are open for submissions for Volume IX as of September 15, 2015!

The Southern California Review encourages new, emerging, and established writers to submit previously unpublished work in all genres. This year, we’re excited to published our ninth volume with the theme IX Lives!

IX Lives. Nine Lives. 9 Lives. Even the theme itself can be written in a number of ways, echoing the mercurial nature of this life we live, as well as present and past, universal and finite systems of language and communication.

IX Lives isn’t just about cats (although let’s be real, we love cats at SCR!). The proverb that cats have nine lives can be applied to our own lives in so many ways. It’s how we change as we grow and learn about the world; it’s a study in identity, of the many hats we wear, the skins we shed or cling to when we transition through the phases of our lives. Whether exploring the human condition, taking a leap into the unknown, or tapping into the supernatural, IX Lives encompasses the power we have in ourselves to take control of our destiny and take on a new shape.

That’s what we’ve done this year at the Southern California Review. Although the Master of Professional Writing has come to end, our journal is entering a ninth “life” of its own. We invite you to submit your stories of transformation and rebirth to help our latest incarnation in Vol. IX.

Guidelines for individual genres are as follows:

  • Fiction. Short stories and stand-alone novel excerpts not in excess of 5,000 words, or up to three pieces of flash fiction, 750 words or fewer.
  • Nonfiction. Memoir, personal essays, and creative nonfiction, again not to exceed the 5,000-word limit.
  • Poetry. Up to three poems of any form and in traditional or experimental styles.
  • Stage & Screen. One-act plays, scenes, or short film and screenplay excerpts not in excess of 15 pages.
  • Comics. We are looking for short, self-contained comics, no more than three pages per piece, with no more than three pieces per submission.
  • Art & Photography. Five pieces per submission with appropriate credit lines.

The deadline to submit is December 15, 2015. All submissions must include a brief bio (250-words or less) in the cover letter. We look forward to reading your submissions!
