Southern Quarterly special issue on “Freedom Summer”

call for papers for section on “Literature of the Movement”

The Southern Quarterly is planning a special issue celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Summer Project and the passage of the Civil Rights Act. We invite submissions for a section devoted to “Literature of the Movement.” Questions might include, how does Freedom Summer shape the literary imagination in general or how have poets and writers represented the events of Freedom Summer in particular works? How did the events of the Freedom Summer influence civil rights-era literature and cultural production?

We are looking primarily for scholarly articles (7,500-9,000 words), though we are also open to unpublished archival materials and poems related to these watershed events and their influence in today’s society. Publication is planned for Fall 2014.

The Southern Quarterly is an internationally-known scholarly journal devoted to the interdisciplinary study of Southern arts and culture. For SoQ, “the arts” is defined broadly, and includes painting, sculpture, music, dance, poetry, photography, and popular culture. We also publish studies of Southern culture from such disciplines as literature, folklore, anthropology, and history. “The South” is defined as the region from the Mason Dixon Line to Central America. Regular features include reviews of books and films, periodic reviews of exhibitions and performances, as well as interviews with writers and artists.
